How Should I Segment my Email Marketing List? [Video]

Hey, it’s Grayson from Leadcadence.com and welcome to another episode of Frequently Asked Questions Friday.

In this week’s episode, we’re going to be answering the question “How should I segment my email marketing list?

When I say “segment my email marketing list,” what I’m talking about is how do we divide up the individual emails that are inside our AWeber or Constant Contact or iContact account so that we can send the right message to the right person?

When people get started email marketing, I usually see them making one main mistake. That mistake is that they have way too many lists inside their account. They create a new list for every new trade show or networking event they go to or for every new product or service that they offer.

If you have too many lists inside your account, it becomes really overwhelming and really difficult to manage all of those.

What I’m going to recommend is that you segment your list into two main categories, and that’s a prospect list and a customer list.

Prospects, like it sounds, are going to be all the people who haven’t purchased from you yet. They should be getting messages about how they would benefit from using your product or service. You want to send them things to build trust and establish credibility in the industry.

You want to send them case studies of how other people have used it and gotten a great result from it. Once they’ve actually purchased from you, you want to be able to move those people onto a customer list.

A customer list can be treated a little bit differently, because you’re able to talk to them in a little more familiar tone.

They’re familiar with the product or service that you offer and maybe you can expand on a little feature that is in that product or service, that if they just did this one thing, they would get a lot more satisfaction or benefit from using it.

Having a customer list also helps you either cross-sell or up-sell those customers to other products or services that you offer, so that they can get even more value and benefit from you company.

Don’t make it any more complicated than it needs to be. Keep your lists down to two: a prospect and a customer list. It will make your life a whole lot easier and I’m sure you’ll see a lot more results.
